What are Veneers?

Dental Veneers

Veneers are a restorative solution that can be used to save your smile. They can improve the appearance and function of your teeth. A veneer is a very thin layer of porcelain or other materials, about 1 millimeter (mm) in thickness, that’s bonded to the front of your existing tooth. It covers only the front surface of your tooth. The pressed ceramic material bonds to both surfaces and results in a beautiful surface once the treatment is finished.

Whether a veneer is right for you will depend on the current condition of your teeth and the issues that you’re trying to fix. Common reasons for restoration are:

  • discolored teeth

  • chipped, cracked, or broken teeth

  • decayed or weakened teeth

  • crooked or misshapen teeth

What’s the process for getting veneers?

The dentist will make an impression of your teeth by digitally scanning or taking a mold. Depending on how much your tooth was trimmed, you may have a temporary veneer placed on the tooth until the new one is ready. When it’s ready, the permanent veneer will replace the temporary one. It will be bonded to the tooth with a special cement and hardened with an UV (ultraviolet) lamp.

There’s typically minimal movement of the tooth after the veneer is in place. But you may need to wear a night guard to protect the veneer if you grind or clench your teeth at night. Let us know if that is an issue for you.
