The new year can be a time of resolutions to be healthier, more organized, or to spend more time with family. But maybe your resolution this year is to have a more beautiful smile! Studies have shown that people who are self-conscious about their teeth are less likely to smile at others, report lower self-esteem, and may avoid social situations altogether. And it’s a very common issue. A 2015 report published by BUPA found that 28 % of people hide their smile when taking pictures, and 42% of respondents said their smile was the first thing they would change about themselves.
If you are unhappy with your current smile, a Total Smile Makeover may be just what you are looking for. Maybe you have had some previous dental work, but you haven’t been able to achieve your desired results. Or, if changes in your teeth from aging or your lifestyle have significantly impacted the appearance of your smile, a smile makeover is worth considering.
What is a Smile Makeover?
A smile makeover is a series of dental procedures utilized primarily for cosmetic purposes. For patients with healthy teeth that are discolored, or have gaps or chips, a smile makeover can transform a less-than-perfect smile into a dazzling one.
A smile makeover combines a variety of cosmetic dental procedures, including
Professional-grade teeth whitening, to brighten up discolored teeth;
Porcelain veneers, which are a thin, shell-like, layer of porcelain that are placed over existing teeth that have flaws, such as chips or discolored spots;
Crowns can correct severely damaged teeth with a natural appearance;
Gum contouring, also called gum reshaping or tissue sculpting, this procedure can even out an uneven gum line.
Who is an Ideal Candidate?
An ideal candidate for a smile makeover is someone with healthy gums and teeth that doesn’t suffer from gum disease or cavities. If you currently have issues with tooth decay and gum disease, we will work to treat those issues before any cosmetic procedures can be completed. This does not necessarily mean that we will not be able to achieve your desired results, it just may take a bit longer to get there.
How long will a Smile Makeover take?
The short answer - it depends! Every patient is different and will require a customized treatment plan for their Smile Makeover. Crowns and veneers require at least two office visits. On the first visit, we will remove any decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown or veneer.
On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown or veneer, and then fit and adjust the final crown or veneer. Finally, it will be cemented into place and you have a new beautiful looking tooth. Depending on the level of whitening desired, professional whitening can take multiple in-office sessions or several weeks of at-home treatment. The final step would be gum contouring, if your gums are too low or too high on your teeth and you would like a more even gumline.
