Gaps in your teeth? What are the options?

If you are self-conscious about small or large gaps in your smile, the good news is there are several options to correct them. With modern cosmetic dentistry, it’s easier than ever to fix imperfections in your teeth. In this blog post, Dr. Peck outlines the potential issues and main cosmetic dentistry options to correct gaps in your teeth.

When considering whether to fix the gaps in your teeth, there are obviously aesthetic considerations, but there are also potential benefits to your oral health. Gaps leave spaces where food and debris particles can get stuck, especially in hard-to-reach areas. A build-up of plaque and harmful bacteria can lead to tooth decay or gum disease. In addition, your surrounding teeth may continue to shift out of place, causing larger spaces to form, or damage from ill-fitting alignment.

If you do decide to move forward with fixing the gaps in your teeth, there are several options to choose from.

Dental Bonding

Bonding is one of the quickest and most cost-effective cosmetic treatments to hide small gaps and improve the overall appearance of your smile. Dr. Peck applies a composite resin material to the sides of the teeth closest to the gap. The resin is then sculpted to widen the teeth and close the gap. The composite resin will match the color of the surrounding teeth to blend in beautifully for a flawless result.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that bond directly to the front and top surfaces of the teeth. A veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct minor imperfections such as gaps. They are an ideal choice for improving your smile and have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity and versatility.

Orthodontic Treatments (Traditional Braces or Clear Aligners)

For larger gaps and gaps accompanied by other misalignment problems (e.g., overbite, underbite), orthodontic treatment may be required to properly reposition your teeth. You have several orthodontic options: you can wear traditional metal braces or use a system of clear, removable aligners. Both put pressure on the teeth to shift them into the desired position. Although Smile New Braunfels does not provide orthodontic services, we can work with your orthodontist on your overall treatment plan.

Crowns

A dental crown is a good option for repairing teeth after tooth decay, an infection, or injury has damaged the natural tooth structure. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile. The crown encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size, and protects and strengthens the tooth structure.

Clearly, there are a variety of different ways to correct a gap in your teeth. Depending on your budget and the overall condition of your teeth, Dr. Peck will work with you to figure out a treatment that meets your needs and goals. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation, give us a call today!
